Southampton’s telecare team goes green

Southampton City Council’s telecare services have taken possession of two new electric vehicles (EVs) for emergency home visits.

The new electric Nissan Leaf vehicles are part of the council’s commitment to tackling climate change and is at the centre of the Green City agenda which is outlined in the Green City Plan which was published in March.

The telecare service offers 24-hour help to over 6,300 city residents, providing security and peace of mind whilst at home.

If users fall or feel unwell, they can access our services by pressing a pendant or wristband, which is connected directly to a local monitoring and responding team that give help when an alarm is raised. So far this year the Responding Team have attended over 6,000 emergency calls.

All the council’s new and existing electric fleet are powered by 100% renewable energy and new charging units were installed at the city depot council transportation hub as part of the ongoing investment in EV infrastructure in Southampton.

‘We appreciate the valued work of our City Telecare team, especially supporting our cities most vulnerable residents throughout the global pandemic and periods of isolation. It is only right with the volume of emergency calls and visits the team have been seeing that green vehicles are used in-line with our Green City strategy,’ said cabinet member for health and adult care, Cllr Lorna Fielker.
